DOMINIQUE SWARZHAUPT

SEMBLANCE

Dominique Schwarzhaupt (Santiago, Chile, 1988) holds a degree in Visual Arts from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Her work has been exhibited in Chile and abroad, notably at the NordArt Fair in Hamburg and the group exhibition Expanded in Berlin. In Chile, she has participated in fairs such as ArtStgo and Ch.ACO, and has developed a solid track record of solo exhibitions, including Common Records at Sala Gasco, Stories at Galería Aninat, Tracing at the Montecarmelo Cultural Center, and Memory Records at Galería Bech. Her work is included in several private collections, including the Ca.sa Collection and the Engel Foundation.

Schwarzhaupt's practice is based on photographs found in old albums, images she has collected over the years. Her interest in these visual archives stems from an intimate experience: the photographs her grandmother showed her, accompanied by stories, names, and anecdotes. Using these materials, the artist illuminates the dual nature of family photographs: a profoundly personal object, but also a fragment of shared memory where anyone can recognize themselves in recollections that are not their own.

Drawing and embroidery—techniques she employs simultaneously—deepen this affective and nostalgic dimension. Drawing, our first language, and embroidery, an inherited craft that evokes maternal gestures and knowledge passed down through generations, intertwine in her work to reclaim practices that have at times been relegated, overshadowed by technological speed or lack of time. In the intersection of these two techniques, Schwarzhaupt restores value to the manual, the intimate, and the human: a search for roots and traces in a world moving toward immateriality.
