RUTH GURVICH
SEMBLANCE
Ruth GURVICH was born in Córdoba, Argentina. She studied Architecture for two years before enrolling at the School of Fine Arts in Córdoba, where she received her degree in 1987. That same year, she was admitted to the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, from which she graduated in 1992.
Her work focuses on the study of iconic objects from different cultures, such as European and Asian ceramics, and international furniture.
Her interest in perspective and its representational codes leads her to construct her paintings in three dimensions in the form of paper models. Initially, the painted models were arranged and flattened to restore the two-dimensionality of painting. Very quickly, Ruth GURVICH decided to preserve the models in their three-dimensional form and to install them like still lifes or landscapes.
An exhibition at the Musée National de la Céramique Adrien Dubouché in Limoges, “Juste pour voir,” in 2002, gave her the opportunity to place her paper works at the heart of the museum’s collections. This proximity, along with an artist residency at the École des Beaux-Arts in Limoges and later at the Centre Culturel Jean-Pierre Fabrègue in Saint-Yriex-La-Perche, allowed her to develop a series of porcelain works based on her paper models. She later worked in collaboration with various manufacturers, creating collections in different materials: in porcelain, “Lithscape” (2008), with the NYMPHENBURG Manufactory in Munich; in silver, “Ceremonia” (2011), with RICHARD ORFÈVRE in Paris; in textiles, “Littoral” (2012), with the PRELLE Manufactory in Lyon; and in glass, “OVERTURN” (2017), with the Mayer’sche Hofkunstanstalt in Munich.
Her installations—composed of works in paper, porcelain, or silver—transcend the boundaries between applied arts and fine arts, continuing to question the body of the object and its representation.
Her work has been presented in national and international museums and art centers, such as: Porcelain Virtuosity, Homo Faber Foundation, Venice; Lust auf Lustheim, Schleißheim Palace, Germany; “Diseño en acción,” Fundación Proa, Buenos Aires; “Lust der Täuschung,” Kunsthalle Munich; Miami Basel, Sarah Myerscough Gallery; “Idem” (19th International Ceramics Biennial of Châteauroux); “House Life,” Museum of Decorative Arts and Design of Bordeaux; “New Craft,” Milan Triennale; “Oracles du design,” La Gaîté Lyrique, Paris; “Les routes du bleu,” National Museum of Ceramics in Limoges; “Rivages,” Museum of Textiles and Decorative Arts in Lyon; “Circuits céramiques” (2010), Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris; Beijing International Design Triennale 2011.
Her works are part of private collections and the following public collections: Musée Ariana, Geneva, Switzerland; Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Dortmund, Germany; Mandet Museum in Riom; Museum of Textiles and Decorative Arts in Lyon; Museum of Decorative Arts in Bordeaux; Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, New York; Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris; Fonds National d’Art Contemporain; Artothèque du Limousin.
