SARAH BECKER
SEMBLANCE
Sarah, born in Denmark, expresses herself through embroidery with a deep fascination for textiles, their structures, colors, and sensitivity. However, her embroidery is far from traditional. She paints with needle and thread, pushing boundaries through self-developed techniques to achieve the expression she seeks. She works with coarse threads, thick wool, and all kinds of recycled materials that have already served a purpose and are given new life in Becker’s artworks.
Like a painter, Sarah Becker works standing up and insists that embroidered works break away from the traditionally small scale of the craft. She creates on a large scale to reveal the true artist she is. Becker is deeply concerned with light and shadow, layers, and color. She highlights maturity, dissolution, and decay, often through enlarged objects and distorted proportions. She never settles for less; when dissatisfied with an expression, she simply embroiders over it. She alternates between saturating surfaces so they gain a dense, sensual texture and allowing undecorated areas the space they need. Increasingly, she works with layered pieces, giving them an added dimension and an even stronger visual expression.
